started like most portrait studios, as
a hobby with a passion for creating images. John Dingo,
owner, graduated with a degree in imaging science and
graphic design and went on to work for Gibson Greeting Cards
and International Paper as a printing and graphic design
research scientist. With faith and overwhelming support from
his family he started his studio business full time.
Running a portrait
photography studio, as with any business, involves
tremendous dedication. Our clients are more and more
educated on technology and digital cameras. We find
ourselves always looking for better ways to educate our
clients on what the difference is between an image created
by a portrait artist and the average photograph. All of our
clients can see the appearance, quality and variety our
studio has to offer, but in the digital world most think it
is something they can recreate themselves because of the
easy access to high-quality cameras and computers.
In this era of studio
photography, we as artists have to constantly look for ways to
improve our products and advance them to keep up with today’s
demanding client. Also in order to survive we have to market,
market, market! That is one thing we have found to be the most
difficult. I feel strongly about continuing education and
studying what successful studios present at seminars and taking
pieces of what works for others and mold them into something
that makes sense for our studio. We have found that getting
consistent on mailings, displays and getting out into the
community has worked well.

One of the largest things that I think will allow us as a
professional portrait artist to stay in business and survive is
we have to produce a product that our target audience wants and
deliver the WOW factor! Dingo Photography & Imaging delivers the
WOW by investing yearly on new graphic techniques, lighting
techniques and props or scenes. When our clients walk into our
camera room they see what we have to offer and it is fun to hear
them say, “I have never seen anything this cool in other
studios!”
Dingo Photography & Imaging’s style is on the cutting edge side
of portrait photography and investing in background sets that
Larry Hershberger designs helps keep our studio the “Got To Go
To Studio”. Our studio has been using Larry’s designs for years
and has found that these unique sets and props have a “look”
that our clients crave. Producing artistic portraits that our
clients can’t do and mix that with lots of marketing and
top-notch service then today’s portrait studio can survive.
